The Daintree Discovery Centre is a world class, international award winning, interpretive facility where you can see, visit and learn more about the wonders of the world’s oldest continually surviving tropical rainforests. Located a 10km drive north of the Daintree Ferry, the Daintree Discovery Centre has excellent car parking facilities and is open seven days a week. Entry to the centre includes: a one hour guided walk, a 48-page interpretive guide book, all day access to the centre, its interactive displays, eco theatre and rainforest coffee shop, and a percentage of every ticket is donated to the Centre’s Carbon Offset Program. Your entry ticket also allows you to return at any time over the next seven days at absolutely no charge, making it excellent value for money.
The mighty Daintree River snakes through ancient rainforest, winding out to the Coral Sea and Great Barrier Reef. These are the world’s oldest, continually surviving, tropical rainforests and it makes sense that the Daintree River is home to some pretty prehistoric fauna, including the mighty (and scary!) saltwater crocodiles. There are two types of crocodile in Australia, the freshwater and saltwater. Freshwater crocodiles have smaller snouts, generally eat fish, and are usually timid. Saltwater crocodiles are totally different! Basking on the muddy banks of the Daintree River, these giants have broad snouts and a reputation for being aggressive. They are the reason you do not go swimming in local waterways and as signage will tell you, they are deadly and have killed people and pets. The best (and safest) way to see them is on a Daintree River Cruise which operates daily with seven different departure times. Advance bookings are strongly recommended for this one hour cruise.
Back Country Bliss Adventures provides a very unique way to explore the tropical rainforests, on a river drift snorkelling adventure in the Mossman River. This exciting new adventure was featured on Channel 9’s ‘Getaway’ program and is a three hour expedition which takes you downstream on a pristine rainforest river. All wetsuits and snorkelling gear is provided, as is a qualified local instructor, who will guide you on this safe, fun and relaxing river drift snorkel. The minimum group size is two and the usual departure time is 10am, but this is flexible pending your itinerary. The same company also offers guided rainforest bushwalks and mountain biking, so if you are after a rainforest experience that is a little bit different, then you should check out Back Country Bliss Adventures.
